Description: Sarah Kennel, the Byrne Family Curator of Photography at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, looks at the genesis, and the enduring beauty and power, of photographer Sally Mann’s family pictures. Kennel examines the role of these images as a cultural touchstone for issues such as childhood, motherhood, and the boundaries between public and private. This lecture was presented at the MFAH in the spring of 2019 in conjunction with the exhibition “Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings.”

Description: The expedition report documents the first south-to-north crossing of Brazilian Guiana. Between 1935 and 1937, the German geologist and zoologist Otto Schulz-Kampfhenkel (who also authored a book of the same name) explored a previously completely unexplored jungle region by first navigating the Amazon and then its tributary, the Rio Jary, all the way up to Guayana. Among other things, the film depicts the jungle life of the Oayana and Oayapi. These two Indian tribes, whose culture had remained at the Neolithic stage, were believed to be extinct until that time.

National Childrens' Home, Sherigham in the 1950's

Description: Westcroft, at 15-17 Hooks Hill Road, Sheringham, was opened by the National Children's Home (NCH) in 1917. The property had been donated to the charity by William Garrood. The neighbouring house was also donated in 1918. The two properties were combined and extended, with a former stable being tumed into a chapel. By 1920, the home could accommodate 50 boys and girls. In its early years, it primarily catered for the orphans of soldiers and sailors but this was eventually broadened to provide for any orphan or destitute child. The initial and long-serving matron of the home was Sister Gertrude Gee.
