Description: Out in Christianshavn lay the Bådsmandsstræde Barracks, and directly opposite, people lived packed closely together in the 'Aladdin Quarter'. One day, they decided they no longer wanted to merely dream about the military’s 'playground'; they broke a hole in the wooden fence and walked inside. This marked the beginning of Christiania—following the Danish military's departure from the site in 1971. The film depicts everyday life during the 'Free Town's' first 5–6 years, covering the renovation of local dwellings, the workshops, concerts in 'Den Grå Hal' (The Grey Hall), rent collection, home births, communal meetings, the lives of children, and the reactions of the surrounding society—including citizens, politicians, and the firm Dansk Total Enterprise. The film features concert footage of the band Gasolin’ and a theatrical performance by the group Solvognen, both taking place in 'Den Grå Hal'.
