Description: Almost a quarter of a century has passed since the Wende, and the history of the GDR has been told a thousand times over. This four-part documentary takes a fresh perspective, portraying people's lives through their own images, words, and stories.
The first installment, titled "From FDJ to FKK" (Free German Youth to Naturism), focuses on holidays, family life, and childhood in the GDR. In the early 1960s, appearing unclothed in public was still frowned upon and officially banned in the GDR. Just a few years later, however, more than 50 kilometers of Baltic Sea coastline had been designated for nudists. The film features dedicated naturists, Baltic Sea campers, and vacationers who traveled either privately or—more commonly—through state-organized programs. Amateur footage also captures FDJ activities and the *Jugendweihe* (youth initiation ceremony). Contemporary witnesses describe the dilemma of balancing the pressure to conform to the collective with the genuine sense of community.
