![]() Year: 1937 Country: Sweden Section: chronicle Tags: boy, girl, swimming Description: At the end of the 1930s, Västerås was a city of contrasts. On the one hand, an old city with aging buildings, on the other hand, one of Sweden's most modern cities with large, rapidly growing export industries in constant need of new labor. Inspired by how other cities worked, the rulers in Västerås decided that the city should be properly documented. Both for the Westerners of the time and for future generations. A photography and film committee was commissioned to have a film made where everything of importance would be documented, they wanted to create a period document from 1937. The committee included Sven Drakenberg, then curator at the Västmanland county museum, among others. Just over thirty-five years after the premiere, he voiced the film's narration. Committed and initiated, he lets us meet people and environments in 1930s Västerås. Because the film was a so-called archive film, they did not have the same requirements for entertainment value as if it had been a feature film. Despite that, the film became something of a box office hit at the Röda Kvarn cinema. With its premiere on December 5, 1938, it ran in double performances every night for a week and was seen by just over 3,000 people. Video Added: 20.12.2020 |
