Description: Eight-year-old Vana lives with her mother and siblings in a slum in the Brazilian city of Recife. They live in a wooden shack that stands on stilts above a boggy ground. Vana tells how life happens in their home. She sweeps the floor of the cramped dwelling, dusts, and helps her mother do laundry. The mother earns the money by washing the clothes of a wealthy family. Vana's job is to go to the pump to fetch water. The women in the other huts also try to earn a living this way. Vana talks about her favorite games, she is seen jumping rope and playing with dolls. In the morning, her mother gets her ready for school, she puts on her school clothes and heads off to school. She is seen in the schoolyard playing with other children and in the classroom doing writing exercises. The Swedish film crew invites Vana and her girlfriend for a trip to the seaside. Vana gets the first ice cream of her life and sings a song in front of the camera.

Description: Following the destruction caused by cyclones that ravaged regions in the south of India towards the end of 1977, this documentary focusses on the second phase of the international rescue operation co-ordinated by the League of Red Cross Societies [former name of the IFRC] in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. The Indian Red Cross organized 170 camps for more than a million people who were made homeless. Distribution of blankets, milk powder, rice, medicine, and cooking instruments. The relief operation then concentrated on the reconstruction of more solid houses. Communal shelters could be used as educational and medical centres when not needed in emergencies.

Description: This film shows the relief aid provided to victims of drought in the Sahel. In response to an appeal from the League of Red Cross Societies, thousands of tons of food was shipped to Liberia and then on to Upper Volta (Burkina Faso) by plane. The League obtained protein-enriched flour from a company in Liberia. At Goroum-Goroum, 300 kilometres north of Ouagadougou, the Upper Volta Red Cross unloaded the relief supplies from the plane and distributed them to Touareg nomads.
