Description: A filmed recollection of Richard Halliburton's travels on the Indian sub-continent in the early 1930s. 1930s, India, Benares, Ghats, pilgrims of all ages bathing in Ganges River, street scenes, shops and bazaars, gold, silver and brass craftsmen, Richard Halliburton learning of guru’s death and being led to where his last rites were being held, corpses being burned at ghat, untouchable, well where lepers bathe, female relative of deceased guru sprinkling corpse with palm oil while untouchables cover his body with cloth and wood, female relative setting funeral pyre on fire, Halliburton watching rites, pile of ashes left after cremation, ashes being scooped up into jar and dumped into Ganges, Hindus praying and bathing in Ganges, Kashmir, skyline, Srinagar, Sher Garhi Palace, waterways, houseboat, floating hotel, Shalimar Garden, Shalimar Bagh, fountains, pools, reflections in water, Halliburton walking hand and hand with young Kashmiri woman through grove of chinar trees, Kashmiri woman putting garland of flowers around Halliburton’s neck, Dehli, Ramadan, cityscape, crowded bazaar, small ferris wheel, Mohammedans, Muslims, Halliburton disguising himself as Muslim and trying to sneak into mosque from side streets to witness religious ceremonies, Muslims washing in pool, Jama Masjid, long rows of Muslims lined up with prayer rugs for first prayer, mu'azzin calling out Adhan call to prayer from minaret, muslims praying by bowing forward several times and standing up, Halliburton being discovered as an infidel and narrowly escaping from angry mob in horse cart driven by buddhist, floor show at nightclub, female dancers spinning around in dance based on temple dances, men drinking and watching dancers, dancers mingling with patrons at tables including with Halliburton, Eurasian / “half- caste” women drinking and embracing Englishmen, Gir Forest, Halliburton and companions traveling on elephant to raja’s hunting lodge, thatch roofed huts, criminals known as “crows,” drunk man stumbling into hut.
